Tour Overview

Reef Experience is a full-day tour to the outer Great Barrier Reef, departing every day from Cairns Marlin Marina. It’s designed to give first-timers, families and confident snorkellers and divers a complete reef day without the extras adding up: your snorkelling, one scuba dive, all your gear and every meal are included in the fare.

The catamaran heads out to two outer-reef sites  chosen by the captain on the day from more than a dozen locations across four reef systems, so you always visit the clearest water and healthiest coral available. Along the way there’s a marine biologist on board to help you understand what you’re seeing beneath the surface.

It suits a wide range of travellers because it doesn’t force a single activity. You can snorkel both sites, take your included dive whether or not you’ve dived before, or simply relax on the sundeck between swims. Prices start at $280 per adult, plus a temporary fuel surcharge of $10 per person. You make your own way to Cairns Marlin Marina and board directly onto Reef Experience.

Locations You May Visit

Reef Experience visits the outer Great Barrier Reef,   the clearer, healthier water beyond the inner reef. Its reef sites include Norman Reef, Saxon Reef, Hastings Reef, Breaking Patches and Michaelmas Cay, and the crew choose two of them on the day for the best conditions.

Norman Reef

One of the most popular outer reefs off Cairns, known for vibrant coral gardens, walls and bommies alive with reef fish. Its variety suits first-time snorkellers and divers alike, and it’s a good place to look for turtles, reef sharks and the resident Maori wrasse.

Saxon Reef

A quieter outer reef between Norman and Hastings, known for coral bommies, swim-throughs and generally excellent visibility  a lovely spot for an unhurried snorkel or guided dive.

Hastings Reef

A classic Cairns outer reef with expansive coral gardens and abundant marine life, including giant clams, parrotfish and clouds of tropical fish. Its gentler areas make it welcoming for beginners.

Breaking Patches

A cluster of coral patches near Michaelmas, where bommies rise from the sandy bottom — often calm, colourful and full of life, and a favourite when conditions suit.

Michaelmas Cay

A protected vegetated sand cay and one of the reef’s most important seabird nesting sanctuaries, ringed by shallow coral. Snorkelling here is gentle and scenic, with turtles often seen. As a protected sanctuary, access to parts of the cay is restricted to safeguard the nesting birds.

The Captain selects the best available locations according to weather, visibility, tides and sea conditions, so the two sites you visit are always chosen on the day for the best experience rather than fixed in advance.

Activities

Snorkelling

Snorkelling suits almost everyone on board. You’ll have two guided sessions at two outer-reef sites, with all equipment and in-water tuition provided. Guides are in the water with you, and flotation support is available, so nervous swimmers and non-swimmers are welcome and looked after. You do not need any experience.

Introductory Diving (no certification needed)

If you’ve never dived, your included dive can be a fully-supervised introductory dive (minimum age 12). A dive professional guides you the whole way after a simple briefing  it’s one of the most memorable things you can do on a first reef visit.

Certified Diving

If you’re already certified, your included dive is a guided dive at the reef. Bring your certification card and log book. A second certified dive is available for $55, and a second introductory dive for $75, taken at the afternoon site.

Meet the Wildlife

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but on the outer reef visitors may encounter:

• Green and hawksbill sea turtles
• Reef sharks (harmless to snorkellers)
• Maori wrasse
• Giant clams
• Parrotfish, angelfish and clouds of reef fish
• Rays
• Hard and soft corals across the reef systems

Seasonal visitors such as dwarf minke whales appear only at certain times of year, and we’ll never promise a seasonal sighting.

Life Onboard & Facilities

Reef Experience runs a high-speed catamaran described by the operator as the fastest of its size and type, with a sundeck for relaxing between swims, an indoor air-conditioned saloon, a licensed bar, and freshwater facilities for rinsing off. The vessel is licensed for 155 passengers but capped at 100 for a more comfortable day with room to move.

Food & Dining

All meals are included. You’ll start with Reef Experience’s famous BBQ egg-and-bacon rolls on the way out, enjoy a fresh buffet lunch at the reef, and finish with wine, cheese and crackers on the return. Tea, coffee and drinking water are available through the day. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available — please advise any other dietary requirements when booking and the crew will do their best to accommodate them.

Before You Book

Swimming ability

You don’t need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel,  sessions are guided and flotation support is provided — but you should be comfortable in the water. Let the crew know if you’re nervous.

Children & minimum age

Snorkelling suits families; the included scuba dive is available from age 12. Children must be supervised by an accompanying adult at all times.

Flying after diving

If you take the scuba dive, allow at least 24 hours between diving and flying (or travelling to altitude, such as the Atherton Tablelands or Kuranda) before you plan onward travel.

Seasickness

The outer reef is a boat trip in open water. If you’re prone to seasickness, take preventative medication before boarding, rest on the upper deck and keep your eyes on the horizon.

Weather & itinerary changes

For your safety and experience, the Captain may change the dive sites, activity times, route, sequence or vessel due to weather and sea conditions.

Pregnancy & medical conditions

Scuba diving is not suitable during pregnancy, and some medical conditions or medications may require clearance from a qualified dive doctor. Please provide accurate health information when booking.
Snorkelling only? You don’t need to complete anything extra. If you would like to try scuba diving on the day, please complete the dive medical questionnaire before your tour, so the dive team can confirm you are ready to dive.

Accessibility

There are steps, ladders and wet decks involved in boarding and water entry. If you have mobility needs, please talk to us in advance so we can give you honest, specific guidance.

Travel insurance

We recommend travel insurance that covers cancellation, medical costs, weather disruption and,  if you’re diving,  diving activities.

Sustainability & Responsible Travel

The reef is precious, and small choices protect it. On the day, please don’t touch or stand on coral, don’t feed or chase wildlife, keep good buoyancy and secure your camera and gear, use reef-safe sun protection, reduce single-use plastic, and follow the crew’s guidance. Reef Experience supports reef conservation through partnerships with Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef and the Reef Restoration Foundation.
