❓ Learn to Dive FAQs

Do I need any experience to learn to dive?

Not at all! Most of our courses are designed for complete beginners. You’ll be guided every step of the way by a professional instructor, starting with the basics — from breathing underwater to using your gear safely and confidently.

What’s the difference between an Introductory Dive and an Open Water Course?

An Introductory Dive (or “Resort Dive”) is a one-day experience — great if you just want to try scuba diving without certification. The Open Water Course is a 4–5 day training program that gives you a full, internationally recognised certification to dive up to 18 metres, anywhere in the world.

How long does it take to get certified?

The Open Water certification usually takes 4–5 days. Some operators offer 2 days of pool + theory in Cairns, followed by 3 days on the reef. Others, like Reef Encounter, offer the full course onboard, with all learning and diving done at sea.

Is it safe to learn to dive on the reef?

Absolutely. The Great Barrier Reef is one of the best places in the world to learn to dive — with calm, warm waters, excellent visibility, and expert instructors who focus on safety and support.

What should I bring?

Just your swimwear, towel, and a sense of adventure! All scuba gear, course materials, wetsuits, and safety equipment are provided. Some liveaboards even include meals, accommodation, and transfers — so you can just relax and focus on learning.
